Soggy Weekend Slows Destiny Motorsports

PETERSEN MEDIA: Getting to the original home base of Destiny Motorsports in North Dakota over the weekend, rainy weather would put a hamper on things as an extended rain delay on Friday night would lead to getting collected in a wreck before Saturday’s program was rained out.

“Friday night was really unfortunate,” Paul McMahan said. “We had weather roll in just as the feature got started, and after a pretty long delay, we got collected in a huge pile up on the restart and really made a long night even longer.”

The team would check into the River Cities Speedway on Friday night in Grand Forks, ND and McMahan would time the MonDak Portables/Ft. Union Supply and Trading/Champion backed No. 4 machine in fifth fastest in his qualifying flight with 36 cars checked into the pits.

Heat race action would see the Nashville, TN resident finish fourth after a spirited battle with Mark Dobmeier, and place him in the 14th starting position for the 40-lap feature event.

As the race came to life, the red flag would waive on the fifth lap as a car flipped wildly in turn four. Under the stoppage, the sky would open up and rain would fall sending drivers and their cars back to their pit area.

Waiting out the weather, action would resume nearly three hours after the rain fell. After a couple of hot lap sessions, the track would still have some greasy spots and that would be evident as the race came back to life.

When the field was shown the green flag, a couple of cars would get out of shape in front of McMahan and with nowhere to go he would get collected in the huge pile up and his machine would get upside down and his night would come to an end.

The team would also be in action earlier in the week as the World of Outlaw Craftsman Sprint Car Series made their return to Eagle Raceway on Tuesday night.

Getting the Destiny Motorsports machine timed in ninth fastest in time trials, McMahan would take care of business during his heat race as a third place finish placed him in the fifth row of the 30-lap feature event.

When the Eagle Nationals feature came to life, McMahan would get into a little early trouble as he would get out of shape on the opening lap and bring out a caution flag.

Surrendering a good starting spot, McMahan would show some nice speed from the back of the pack. Navigating his way through some tricky traffic, McMahan would work his way forward and pocket a 15th place finish at the stripe.

“It was just kind of a frustrating week overall,” McMahan said. “Friday night we waited our weather and got collected in someone else’s mess, and in Nebraska we were in a good spot with a really good car and got turned on the first lap and had to go to the back. These guys keep working hard and we keep doing what we can night in and night out.”
