Strong Gold Cup Opener Goes South for Paul McMahan

PETERSEN MEDIA: Getting back to his native California over the weekend, Paul McMahan would have a very good showing going during the Gold Cup Race of Champions opening night event, but he would get collected in a mid race issue that ultimately ended his night.

“Friday night we had a pretty good night going,” Paul McMahan said. “We timed in well, won our heat, and made the dash. We were a little tight at the start of the feature but we were starting to get better, but unfortunately we got caught up with an issue in front of us.”

With 40 cars checked into Silver Dollar Speedway on Friday night, McMahan would be the first car out for time trials in flight one and would end up timing in third quick.

Getting the jump in his heat race, McMahan would look very strong aboard the MonDak Portables/Ft. Union Supply and Trading/Champion Brand Lubricants entry as he picked up the win and moved into the Dash.

Starting fourth in the Dash, contact on the opening lap would get the Elk Grove, CA native out of shape and he would lose several positions and end up finishing eighth in the six-lap affair.

Battling a tight car in the race’s early laps McMahan would fall back as far as 12th before he was able to get moving the right direction. Getting into ninth on the 14th lap, a car would spin just in front of him on the 16th lap and it would result in McMahan making contact and getting over on his side as he would then be struck by another car.

With the race beyond the halfway point, McMahan would be guaranteed no time in the work area and his promising night was cut short early.

Returning to the track on Saturday night for the Gold Cup finale, an early pill again would not be so kind to McMahan as the track would continue to pick up speed during time trials.

Ending up 15th quickest in time trials, McMahan would finish ninth in his heat on a surface that was extremely heavy and nearly impossible to pass on. Moving into the semi, McMahan would do all he could as he chased after a spot in the 40-lap feature event.

Working from the ninth spot, McMahan would get up to fifth and finish just one spot out of the transfer.

“Saturday night we were all kind of dealt a tough hand,” McMahan said. “Unfortunately for us, we went out second in time trials and didn’t stand a chance as the track picked up speed all session. My guys worked hard and we did all we could, it was just a disappointing end to the weekend.”
